BROADWAY AVENUE REALIGNMENT

DDS ENGINEERING, PLLC was selected through a Qualification Based Selection process by the City of Bowling Green to provide a boundary and utility research, existing and proposed rights-of-way survey, topographic survey, preliminary design for three alternates, final design for the preferred alternate, and construction management services for the realignment of the intersection of Broadway Avenue and High Street.  The design team relied heavily on public input and ideas, which were obtained from an Advisory Committee comprised of the major stake holders in the area.

The purpose of the project was to improve safety and reduce the high accident rate for this intersection.  DDS was also charged with incorporating features that would result in a functional pedestrian/bicycle friendly intersection that would serve as an aesthetically pleasing gate to transition from the commercial area of Broadway into the historical residential neighborhoods of East Twelfth Street.

DDS performed extensive utility and boundary research and a complete boundary survey of the proposed and existing rights-of-ways affected by the project and surrounding properties. A comprehensive topographic survey of the realignment corridor was also completed and utilized for the design. The control for the project was established utilizing GPS survey methods and referenced to the Base Station located KYTC’s District 3 office. The properties within the limits of project were old and not well monumented, providing additional challenges for DDS. The research of archive deeds and plats along with recovery of surveys, both recorded and unrecorded, proved to be invaluable. One of the affected adjoiners challenged the R/W location in front of their business; DDS worked with the city attorney and provided expert testimony regarding the survey findings that led to an amicable resolution to the matter.

Final documents included civil engineering construction documents, rights-of-way plans, geometric layout of the roadway, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, crosswalks, new roadway drainage, and pedestrian travel ways along the roadway.
