MAMMOTH CAVE TRAIL REHABILITATION

Mammoth Cave National Park was established in 1941 to protect the unparalleled underground labyrinth of caves, and the rolling hilly country above the Green River Valley which adorn the Park.  Visitors have toured Mammoth Cave dating back to 1816. Many improvements have been made within the Cave since the first tour was given, but the need for a safer, more sustainable interior trail system was still a pressing matter.  Using a topographic survey prepared by DDS in 2007/2008 (see project here), the National Park Service designed a more permanent, safer trail system comprised of concrete pavers and cast in place concrete.

DDS worked with The Tradesmen Group, Inc, The National Park Service and The Mammoth Cave National Park to provide both construction layout and staking services as well as construction material testing services.  Concrete used for the trails was carefully tested, as each batch was made on site, within the Cave, and carried by hand to the final placement site in 5-gallon buckets.  Following the completion of the construction of the new pathways, DDS performed an as-built survey of the improved trails in order for The Tradesmen Group, Inc. to have an accurate quantity estimate to be used for final payment.  DDS utilized a Topcon GLS 2000 3D Laser Scanner to accurately measure said areas.  This data was also utilized in compiling a 3D Tour of both Little Bat Avenue and the Methodist Church; both of these can be viewed below and at the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center.
