PENNYRILE STATE RESORT PARK BEACH RESTORATION

On July 9, 1954, the 15,331 acre showcase of Kentucky’s magnificent hardwood trees was turned over from the United States Government to the Kentucky State Park System.  This area came to be known as the Pennyrile Forest State Park or, as it is known today, Pennyrile State Resort Park.  Around the same time, the completion of the 56-acre Pennyrile Lake provided a source of fresh water to the area as well as affording Pennyrile State Resort Park with a beautiful swimming area that was enjoyed by many for decades.  Unfortunately, this swimming area was left neglected for some years which left many hazards to both the environment and human life.

DDS ENGINEERING, PLLC was approached by the Commonwealth of Kentucky to develop a restoration plan for this beach area and to guide the then undetermined contractor through the construction phases.  DDS began this project by completing a topographic survey of the entire beach area.  In addition to the beach area, DDS crews performed a complete topographic survey of the lake’s floor throughout the swimming area.  With this information in hand, DDS’ Civil Engineering Department was able to set to work developing a detailed restoration plan.

Led by Jason Blakeman, PE, PLS, DDS’ Civil Engineering Department prepared a multi-faceted plan to revitalize the beach area to its original pristine condition.   First, a plan to repair the existing weir wall and stream channel was developed.  This wall, which is constructed of natural laid stone original to the beach, was painstakingly worked around in order to maintain both its integrity and historical value.  A large amount of silt and debris, which had collected in this channel, had to be carefully removed, as well.  A detailed plan of repairs was established to repair the original steps leading to the pavilion above, which overlooks the lake.  In addition to a complete grading plan to restore the lake floor and the beach to its original elevations, a detailed Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Plan (EPSC) was developed.  Detailed plans were also created to route necessary utilities from the overlooking pavilion to the beach in order to provide an emergency telephone and a foot washing station.

DDS played an intricate role in the competitive bidding process used to select a contractor.  Knight’s Construction of Slaughters, Kentucky was selected to carry out DDS’ design plans.  DDS remained in constant contact with Knight’s throughout the construction process and, upon completion, provided a complete set of As-Built Plans to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

The ingenuity of DDS coupled with the craftsmanship of Knight’s Construction has provided the Commonwealth once again with a beautiful location for Kentuckian’s to play and relax!
