Western Kentucky University
is the third largest university in Kentucky. Its campus
dates from the late 1800’s, and today covers more than
400 acres in the center of Bowling Green, Kentucky. As
with most colleges, the parking of cars is of great
concern, but especially so at WKU. Major additions are
currently being made due to the growing student body and
faculty at Western Kentucky University. To help
accommodate this growth a new lot was created at the
corner of College Street and 15th Avenue.
DDS
ENGINEERING,
PLLC
performed field reconnaissance, topographic surveys and office
calculations to support the preparation of a topographic
map at one-foot contours, showing numerous spot
elevations which would be important in the design and
construction of these lots. We provided detailed
vehicular movement analysis and used that to determine
the best utilization of the parking areas. We prepared
storm water runoff calculations, site layout plans,
grading and drainage plans, erosion control plans,
details and specifications for this project.
This particular design was very challenging due to the
existing steep grade the parking lot was to be
constructed. Therefore, the layout of the parking spaces
were strategically placed to minimize the effects of
this grade on the patrons when entering and exiting
their vehicles. This was accomplished by designing the
parking lot so that the majority of the parking spaces
would lie parallel with the slope. The design of this
parking lot was successfully completed in the urgent
time frame set forth by Western Kentucky University.
