Western Kentucky University
is the third largest university in Kentucky. Its
campus dates from the late 1800’s, and today covers more
than 400 acres in the center of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
As with most colleges, the parking of cars is of great
concern, but especially so at
WKU.
Major additions and revisions are currently being made
due to the growing student body and faculty at
Western Kentucky University.
To help accommodate this growth the re-construction of
the Pit Parking Lot located near the corner of Center
Street and 14th Avenue.
DDS
ENGINEERING,
PLLC
performed field reconnaissance, topographic surveys and
office calculations to support the preparation of a
topographic map at one-foot contours, showing numerous
spot elevations which would be important in the design
and construction of these lots. We prepared storm water
runoff calculations, site layout, site grading and
drainage plans, erosion control plans, details and
specifications for this project.
This particular design was very challenging due to the
existing steep grade the parking lot was to be
constructed. Therefore, the layout of the parking spaces
were strategically placed to minimize the effects of
this grade on the patrons as well as to maximize the
effectiveness of site drainage and to remove the need
for underground storm sewer. The design of this parking
lot was successfully completed in the urgent time frame
set forth by
Western Kentucky University.
