WKU HOUCHENS INDUSTRIES - L.T. SMITH STADIUM

Continuing the long standing professional history DDS ENGINEERING, PLLC shares with Western Kentucky University (WKU), DDS has performed all necessary land surveying, civil & geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and special inspection services required at the Houchens Industries - L.T. Smith Stadium in recent history.

Beginning in 2002, DDS performed all necessary research, field reconnaissance, field survey work and office calculations required for the preparation of a topographic survey of the existing facility.  The purpose to performing this survey was to provide the necessary information required to install under-drains and the final playing surface.  DDS also evaluated the existing storm water management conditions, provided rock soundings and prepared the calculations and design of the under-drain system.  Following the instillation of the above referenced items, DDS returned to the Stadium to perform as-built measurements and produce record drawings.

Moving forward to 2005, DDS assisted the Scott Center at WKU in performing a geotechnical investigation for the proposed $37.5 million renovation and addition to the facility.  The scope of this expansion and renovation included the construction of the new West Grand Stand, adding approximately 5,000 seats, football offices, training rooms, concessions and restrooms to the campus, as well renovating the existing East Grandstand and adding an End Zone Plaza.  DDS provided field layout of boring locations, field personnel during drilling operations as well as collected soil and rock samples for laboratory testing procedures.

Additionally, DDS was selected by Heery International to provide civil engineering services for this project.  DDS scope of design included utility extensions, design of a new entrance onto a federal highway and the design of a new storm water system to manage the entire facility.  Due to the layout of the existing structures and the required grades for the playing surface, DDS was not able to treat and disperse storm water in a traditional manner.  Instead, storm water is treated and transferred to WKU Football’s practice field, located behind the new West Grandstand, where it is dispersed across the lawn via pop-up emitters.

DDS remained on site throughout the entire construction of the project, providing all needed construction material testing and special inspection services required.
